We work with artists to translate their clay and wax works into cast glass sculptures for design, exhibition & awards. At the studio we can create the original form or use yours to cast from. Glass casting is a process-intensive technique, a specialist hand built mould around the form in 3 layers; the wax is removed from the cured mould using steam; the mould is loaded into a kiln with glass suspended above the mould in a crucible; we write a firing schedule to suite the annealing needs of the object; the kiln is programmed to heat up slowly to top casting temperature where the glass is monitored as it enters the mould over several hours; the kiln is programed to cool down over several days; once ambient temperature is achieved the mould is un-veiled and the glass cleaned; the casting is then cold worked or ground & polished.
1000 Degrees Studios works with animator, glass artist & Lecturer Lienors Torre to cast her Deakin University Alumni Awards. Lienors creates the blank form in wax which Bethany casts into lead crystal using a lost wax casting technique. Lienors then skillfully polishes and carves the casting into its final form.
At 1000 degrees glass studios we offer firing services covering all areas of glass kiln forming from fusing, slumping, pate de verre to open mould and lost wax casting and some firing of ceramics.
